What this tool does

This calculator takes total door revenue, plus an optional separate bar revenue split, and shows exactly what each party walks away with. It supports the two most common nightlife and event deal structures. In a straight split, you set a fixed percentage for the promoter, the venue, and the DJ or talent, and the tool validates that they add up to 100% before calculating dollar payouts. In a guarantee-versus-percentage deal, talent is paid whichever is greater (a guaranteed minimum) or lesser (a capped guarantee) of a flat guarantee amount or a percentage of door revenue, whichever your contract specifies, with the remaining door revenue split between promoter and venue. If your venue also splits bar revenue with you, a separate promoter bar percentage is applied on top of the door split. The output is a payout table per party plus a note showing each party's effective percentage of total gross revenue, which is often different from their contract percentage once a guarantee kicks in.

Who it's for

Built for event promoters negotiating or reviewing a venue deal before signing, DJs and talent checking whether a guarantee or a percentage deal pays better for an expected crowd size, and venue owners modeling payouts before a private event. It's useful any time money needs to be split three ways after a door counts.

How to use it

  1. Enter total door revenue for the event.
  2. If the venue also splits bar sales with you, turn on the bar split toggle and enter bar revenue and your promoter bar percentage.
  3. Choose your deal type: straight percentage split, or guarantee versus percentage for talent.
  4. For a straight split, enter promoter, venue, and DJ/talent percentages, they must add up to 100%.
  5. For guarantee vs percentage, enter the guarantee amount, the percentage rate, whether talent gets the greater or lesser of the two, and how the remainder splits between promoter and venue.
  6. Read the payout table and each party's effective percentage of gross revenue.

Good to know

This calculator assumes one door revenue figure and, optionally, one bar revenue figure, it doesn't model multiple revenue streams like VIP tables, merch, or sponsorships. It doesn't account for taxes, credit card processing fees, or contractual minimums beyond the guarantee-vs-percentage structure you select. Real contracts sometimes include tiered percentages that change above certain revenue thresholds, which this tool does not model. Always confirm the actual split against your signed contract before relying on these numbers for a payout dispute.

Frequently asked questions

What is a typical promoter and venue door split?

A common structure gives the promoter 50-70% of door revenue with the venue keeping the rest, though splits vary widely based on who's providing marketing, staffing, and drawing the crowd. New promoters with smaller followings often start closer to 40-50%.

What does 'guarantee vs percentage' mean for a DJ?

It means the DJ is paid whichever is greater: a flat guaranteed fee, or an agreed percentage of the door. If a DJ has a $500 guarantee against 10% of the door and the door does $6,000, the DJ earns $600 (the percentage), since it's higher than the guarantee.

Do promoters usually get a cut of the bar too?

It depends on the venue relationship. Many venues keep 100% of bar revenue since it's their ongoing business, but promoters who consistently drive a big crowd sometimes negotiate a bar percentage, commonly in the 5-15% range, on top of their door split.

What happens if a DJ's guarantee is higher than the total door revenue?

If the guarantee exceeds available door revenue, the promoter or venue is on the hook to cover the shortfall out of pocket, unless the contract caps payouts at the door total. This calculator flags when a guarantee exceeds what's available to pay it.

How do I calculate my effective percentage of an event's revenue?

Divide what you actually received by total gross revenue (door plus bar, if applicable) and multiply by 100. This number often differs from your contract percentage whenever a guarantee, cap, or bar-only split is involved.
